Tires, wheels, and what the wheels were hiding

A puncture in the crown is a small repair; a puncture in the sidewall is a new tire. A shake at 60 mph is a balance; a shake through the pedal is a rotor. Knowing which is which is the whole job, and it is why nothing here gets quoted before it gets measured.

A dismounted tire on the machine with the puncture marked from the inside

Tire repair, done the way it is supposed to be

The repairable area is the tread crown, up to 1/4 in across. That gets a combination patch-plug fitted from inside the dismounted tire — the patch seals the liner, the plug fills the hole. A string plug pushed in from the outside takes five minutes and lets nobody look at the inside, which is where a tire driven flat shows the damage. We break it down, inspect it, and tell you what we found.

New tires racked and labeled with size and DOT date

New tires

The quote is the out-the-door total: tires, mounting, balancing, stems, disposal and tax. And we read the DOT build date out before anything is mounted.

A used tire being inspected inside with tread depth being measured

Used tires

Inspected inside and out, tread depth measured and written on the ticket, build date read aloud. If we would not put it on our own car, it does not go on yours.

A wheel being mounted and torqued in a star pattern

Mounting & installation

Including tires you bought online, at the same price. Torqued to spec, then a free re-torque after 50 mi once the mounting settles.

An alignment rack printout showing camber, caster and toe against spec

Wheel alignment

Camber, caster and toe, measured against your vehicle's factory spec. You keep the before-and-after printout. If it is already in spec, we say so.

A wheel on a road force balancer with the loaded roller against the tread

Balancing & road force

A standard balance fixes most vibrations. One that survives it is a shape problem, and the road-force machine is what finds whether it is the tire or the wheel.

A TPMS sensor and service kit laid out beside a wheel

TPMS service

A steady light means low pressure. A blinking one means the system itself. Different problems, different costs, and you hear which before we quote.

All-terrain truck tires with the load range letter visible on the sidewall

Truck & SUV tires

Load range matters more than tread pattern if you tow or haul. Tell us what you pull, not only the size on the door jamb.

A brake rotor being measured with a micrometer while the wheel is off

Brake service

The wheels are already off, so pad and rotor measurements come with every tire job — whether or not you buy anything.

A bay in San Diego with a vehicle on the lift and all four wheels off

Every incentive in this trade runs the other way. Ours does not.

A shop paid on tire volume has a reason to call a repairable puncture unrepairable, to quote four when two would do, and to say nothing about how long a "new" tire sat in a warehouse. San Diego Tire Shop says all three out loud, and each one costs us money.

The build date, read out loud
The last four digits of the DOT code are the week and year the tire was made. Rubber ages whether or not it turns, and a chain shipping from a central warehouse does not know the age of the stock on the truck. We do, and we tell you.
Repaired, not replaced
A puncture in the crown under 1/4 in gets a patch-plug. That is a small job instead of a new tire, and it is the first thing we check.
Two tires, when two is right
All-wheel drive genuinely needs matched circumference. Most cars do not. We look up your tolerance in front of you rather than quoting four by reflex.
The warranty read plainly
Most road-hazard cover pays against remaining tread and excludes mounting, balancing and disposal. If it is worth buying we say so. If it is not, we say that too.

How it works

Four steps from the first call to a wheel torqued to spec.

  1. 1

    Tell us the vehicle

Year, make, model, or just the size off the sidewall — something like 225/65R17. A photo by text works too.

  2. 2

    We measure

Tread depth on all four corners in 32nds, pressure, wear pattern, and brakes while the wheels are off. The numbers go on the ticket.

  3. 3

    Out-the-door price

Tires, mounting, balancing, stems, disposal and tax in one number. Anything that would change it, you hear first.

  4. 4

    Torqued & re-torqued

Star pattern to the vehicle's foot-pound spec, then back in after about 50 mi for a free re-torque.

Visiting Elite Tire Shop on University Avenue

Elite Tire Shop at 6215 University Avenue, Suite B, San Diego is the provider associated with San Diego Tire Shop. The location is in the 92115 ZIP area. Use the University Avenue address when confirming your visit, especially if you found this site through a page about a different San Diego neighborhood.

For a flat or a recurring pressure loss, tell the shop which tire is affected, what you have noticed and whether you need help arranging an inspection. Describe any visible damage and mention if the tire was driven while low. The shop needs to assess the tire before confirming whether repair or replacement is appropriate.

If you are comparing tires, bring the vehicle details and current tire size into the conversation. Discuss the driving you actually do and the budget for the complete installation. Ask whether the quoted price includes balancing, valve or TPMS work and old-tire disposal, and confirm that the selected size is available before making the journey to University Avenue.

Start with tire repair, new tires or tire balancing. To plan the visit, send your vehicle details and request a callback. Appointment timing, stock and the final work required are confirmed with the shop, not by submitting the form.

Wet stopping distance falls off long before the legal limit. The number is 4/32.

2/32 in is where a tire is legally worn out in most states. 4/32 in is where it stops clearing water properly, and the difference shows up as a longer stop in the rain, not as anything you feel on a dry road. We will measure yours and tell you which side of that you are on, free.

Tire questions, answered straight

Repairs, pricing, tread depth and the things a chain has no reason to tell you.

Can my tire be repaired, or do I need a new one?

If the puncture is in the tread crown and under 1/4 in across, it is repairable, and we will repair it. That means a combination patch-plug fitted from inside the dismounted tire, not a string plug pushed in from the outside. Punctures in the shoulder or sidewall are not repairable at any price, because that rubber flexes on every rotation. We show you where yours is before we quote anything.

Do I have to replace all four tires?

On most two-wheel-drive cars, no. Two on the same axle is correct as long as the pair matches. All-wheel drive is the real exception, because those systems need the rolling circumference within a tolerance printed in your owner's manual, and we look that up in front of you. When the gap is small, shaving a new pair down to match is often cheaper than buying four.

How much do four new tires cost in San Diego?

It depends on size and class, but the number we give you is the out-the-door total: tires, mounting, balancing, valve stems or TPMS service kits, disposal and tax. A price that is only the tire is not a price. Call (858) 988-6336 with your size or your plate and we will quote the real figure.

Will you mount tires I bought online?

Yes, at the same price as tires bought here. Same machine, same balance, same torque spec, same inspection, no penalty rate. It costs us the margin on the tire, and it is also why people call us. Have them shipped here and we will take delivery.

How do I know when my tires are worn out?

Tread depth is measured in 32nds of an inch. 2/32 in is the legal minimum in most states. 4/32 in is where wet stopping distance starts to fall off noticeably. Neither number is a rule that says buy today. We measure all four corners, write the numbers down, and tell you roughly how many months that is at your mileage.

What does the DOT date on a tire mean?

The last four digits of the DOT code stamped on the sidewall are the week and the year the tire was built. A code ending 3623 means the thirty-sixth week of 2023. New is not a date: a tire can sit in a warehouse for years and still be sold as new, and rubber ages whether or not it turns. We read that code out loud on every tire before it goes on your car.

Do you take walk-ins, or do I need an appointment?

Flat repairs and most tire work are walk-in jobs, and we would rather you came straight in with a soft tire than drove on it. Alignments and bigger jobs are better booked so the rack is free when you arrive. Call (858) 988-6336 and we will tell you what the wait looks like today.

Tell us the size, we'll tell you the price

Call for an out-the-door quote, or send a photo of the sidewall and we will price it from that. Serving San Diego and the surrounding area.
